  1. First settled by the Guarani Indians, Sebastian Cabot visited the
  2. country in 1527 and in 1535 it became a Spanish possession.  In
  3. 1811 Paraguay gained independence and lost much of its territory
  4. during the War of the Triple Alliance from 1865 to 1870.  During
  5. the Chaco War from 1932 to 1935 with Bolivia, substantial land
  6. was acquired.  General Alfredo Stroessner has ruled Paraguay from
  7. 1954.                    @
